New report on HIV and AIDS in the UK from House of Lords |

A new report from the house of Lords Select Committee " No vaccine, No cure; HIV and AIDS in the UK" says the Government should recognise the scale of the HIV and AIDS challenge in the United Kingdom. Not enough is being done to respond to a steadily growing risk to public health. There are potentially huge cost implications in both the short- and long-term in failing to deal effectively with the epidemic. At a time when public health in the United Kingdom is subject to major reform, the Government should ensure that HIV and AIDS is a key public health priority. Read more of the report here.

The end of AIDS is in sight! |

Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town urges the world to keep up the fight against AIDS in the face of a 10% decline in funding in 2010. Tutu said "But just as the end of AIDS has finally come within reach, we are witnessing an unprecedented drop in financial and political support for the cause." Read more here.

!0% Fall In Funding for AIDS |
Funding from donor governments for the AIDS response in low- and middle-income countries in 2010 fell 10 percent from the previous year's level, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation and Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) report.There is no doubt that this reduction is linked to economic strain felt by countries across the globe. UNAIDS estimates that an investment of at least $22 billion will be needed by 2015 in order to avert more than seven million deaths. Read more here.

Archbishop Sentamu heads up Mildmay appeal |

Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu will front CHAA member, Mildmay international in their BBC Radio 4 Appeal in support of its HIV care, treatment and training programmes in Sub-saharan Africa. The Appeal – which will air twice at 7.55am and 9.26pm on Sunday 9th October and also to be made available through the BBC iPlayer – sets out to challenge some preconceptions of aid to Africa, outlines the resilience and resourcefulness of Africans in the face of the devastating HIV epidemic and explain how charities like Mildmay International, that work with existing support structures of family and community, can have the greatest impact.

New hope for AIDS vaccine |
The last two years have given us many new reasons for optimism as trial after trial have shown positive results that point us toward ending the AIDS epidemic. The run of good science began two years ago in Thailand with the results of the RV 144 vaccine trial, and now points to more evidence that will help make an AIDS vaccine a reality. Read more here.
